Walter J. Pakulski
November/25/1930 - June/11/2018

Walter J. Pakulski, age 87, a longtime resident of Toledo's Polish Village, passed away peacefully Monday, June 11, 2018. Walter was born on November 25, 1930 to Felix and Mary (Michalak) Pakulski.

Walt lived by the wise philosophy of "church, family and community." Walt married the love of his life, Maryann Glowczewski, in 1959 and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage before her death in 2016. His most notable trait was being a very positive person. Walt was always looking for good things no matter what the situation. His signature greeting was, "What's the good word?"

In his career as an educator and an insurance man for the community, he serviced others. He believed in and taught the value of education, especially how it could open up new possibilities for a person and their community. He consistently asked new acquaintances where they went to school and encouraged lifelong learning. His children fondly remember their summer vacations staying on college campuses so he could complete continuing education courses while providing a low-cost family vacation, all while exposing the kids to a university campus.

Walt's own educational history included attending Webster School (where Eleanor Roosevelt handed him his nursery school diploma), Parkland, then Woodward High School, graduating in 1949. He earned his Bachelor's of Education degree in 1953 from the University of Toledo. After graduation, Walter joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War; he was a member of the 9th Infantry Division. His first professional teaching position was at Airport Community Schools in Carleton, MI. Simultaneously, Walt earned his Masters degree in Administration and Guidance Counseling with a Driver Education minor. Walt eventually became the Director of Guidance and Counseling and Director of Driver Education at Mason Consolidated Schools in Erie, MI, where he served for 33 more years. Many of Walt's past students (and all his children) remember memorizing and discussing Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address," as he thought it set a moral compass for the country in a very concise way. He greatly respected members of the United States Armed Forces and deeply appreciated their sacrifices to protect our great country.

Walter demonstrated his skill as a driving instructor as he taught his seven children and multiple people in the community. Walt was knowledgeable, well read, and humorous. He enjoyed acquiring news from any venue. He would cut out and give you written information (lovingly referred to as "homework") that he deemed relevant to you. Walt was a lifelong member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church where he was active in the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the school board. Walt also ran his own insurance agency out of his home. Walt was very involved in his children's and grandchildren's lives. He was a leader in the Cub Scouts and in coaching sports teams.

He is survived by his children David (Dorothy) Pakulski, Steven Pakulski, Ann Marie (Fred) Burdick, Drs. Laura (Kelly) McGuire, Carol (Charlie) Scally, Robert (Jennifer) Pakulski and Sarah (Mark) Bratt, as well as 16 grand-children Lauren, Ryan, Alex and Krista Burdick, Michael , Jessica Isaacs, Julie, Kyle, Connor, Logan, Liam and Aubrey McGuire, Jacob, Brooke and Zachary Scally, and Claire Pakulski. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and wife Maryann, and brothers Joseph, John, Stanley and Edward.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Saints Adalbert and Hedwig Catholic Church. Please consider spreading a good word or doing a random act of kindness in Walt's memory. The family thanks the special caregivers at Kingston Residence of Sylvania for their compassionate care.
